Laurel Business Institute
People
In 1995, Chris and Nancy Decker needed a location for their new business school in Uniontown. The former West Penn Trolley Station offered grandeur in a great location, but required extensive rehabilitation. The Deckers secured a federal historic preservation grant and two loans from The Progress Fund. The building was soon restored to its former glory, and the Laurel Business Institute proved such a success that, by 2002, it faced a parking crunch.
Progress
This time around, The Progress Fund loaned $210,000 so that the Deckers could purchase a derelict building adjacent to the school, and build a sorely needed 175 additional parking spaces.
Impact
The new parking area will accommodate students and community members seeking to further their education. It also serves a newly opened Internet café, which brings a hip, high-tech amenity to Fayette County.
